Biographies of the Artists

Structures, Light & Time is a theme I keep coming back to. Photographing such subjects, both old and new, reveals to me a compelling variety of textures and moods. This exhibit is a sample of what grabs my attention, and challenges me to make a visually pleasing image.

I’ve been a photographer for many years and enjoy photographing a variety of subjects near my home in Midland Park, NJ as well as travelling hither and yon. As a member of the New Jersey Photography Forum, I’ve exhibited my work in many venues in and around NJ. I am also a member of the Ridgewood Camera Club.

Like many photographers, John Markanich learned the craft at his father’s elbow in a temporary home darkroom. In 1968 he enrolled as a fine art student at the Ridgewood School of Art where he studied the classical approaches in 2-dimensional design. Later, when circumstances permitted, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy with a minor in Art History at The William Paterson College of New Jersey. It was here his interest in photography accelerated from an ‘event-record’ to an ‘event-found’. He began to seriously consider the medium as a viable art form and moved more and more to being in control of the entire process.

For over thirty years he pursued his craft in a very permanent home darkroom with all the matting, mounting and framing chores creeping into his sleeping and living space. He has been awarded 1st Place in numerous photographic categories in contests throughout the state and has achieved ‘Best in Show’ Award in the Ringwood Manor Association of the Arts Annual Open Photography Competition. On six occasions, he has been awarded ‘Best In Show’ in the Annual West Milford Camera Club Contest. He has been called upon to act as judge in several area photography club events. In addition, he has photographed family and individual portrait sittings and has held the position of on-call Staff Photographer for Bank of America. Much of his work resides in corporate settings and private collections, both here and abroad. John currently occupies a position on the exhibition committee of the New Jersey Photography Forum.

The transition from film to digital has been, as for all photographers, an adventure in both success and blank stares of bewilderment at computer monitors. Photographers who have made the full or partial switch from two very different yet basically similar mediums will testify that although the tools have changed ultimately successful imagery comes down to the vision of the photographer. It has been this consistency of vision that has made this migration of photographic approach rewarding for this photographer.
