Her most recent bilingual Russian-English poems and poetry translations from Russian into English have appeared in EastWest Literary Forum and in Точка.Зрения / View.Point (litpoint.press). Yana’s work was designated by Точка.Зрения / View.Point as among “Best of 2022” in the category “Literary Translation”.

She has a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University, and a PhD in Statistics from Cornell University. Currently, she works as a data scientist in the telecommunications industry.

She is a student in Fairleigh Dickinson University’s MFA program in Creative Writing, where she has been awarded the Mitch and Lynn Baumeister Scholarship.

Yana Kane was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States when she was 16.  A published poet herself, in 2021 she began to translate the Russian-speaking Ukrainian citizens’ “Poetry of Witness” to the aggression that ultimately  manifested itself in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A resident of Madison, over the past year she has been reading her translations at the monthly Platform Open Mics presented by Arts by the People at the Madison Community Arts Center.

For this evening, Yana will read the translations she has gathered of seven Ukrainian “poets of witness”:

Dmitri Blizniuk (Kharkiv)
Andrei Kostinsky (Kharkiv)
Inna Kvasivka (Odessa)
Oleg Ladyzhensky (Kharkiv)
Galina Pashkova (Kharkiv)
Anastasia Shakirova (Kiev)
Alexander Shchedrinskiy (Odessa)

She will also talk about what this work means to her, how she came to do it, her relationship to the poets, and the process she goes through in making the translations.
