A quiet, neglected daughter from a rural family in Ireland with too many mouths to feed is sent to live with her mother’s cousin Eibhlin and her husband Sean who have no children of their own. When we first meet Cait, she’s withdrawn, shamed and teased for bed-wetting, and a true outsider in her community. She is dutiful and while apprehensive, Cait accepts the change. Her new family consists of an older couple with no other children around. At Eibhlin and Sean’s house, she finds a sense of belonging as she is taught useful life skills. And where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one. The Quiet Girl is a simple but powerful story about growing up and discovering family against a background of neglect.
